You have a sewing machine, some fabric and would like to sew your own face mask? We’ll show you how it’s done.

All you need is a lace and a piece of cotton fabric (from an old shirt or bedsheet, for instance) that’s about 18 x 36 cm, which is around 7.1 x 14.2 inches.

Fold the long sides aprox. 1 cm (0.4 inch) to the inside and use an iron to press them down.

Sew the upper edge by using a zigzag stitch and the bottom edge using a running stitch.

Fold it in the middle as shown in the picture below and sew together the edges at the bottom.

Turn the fabric inside out.

Now start on the side with the zigzag stitch and take in the mask on 3 sides.

You sould leave around 1 – 1.5 cm (0.4 – 0.6 inch) on the right and left side, and aprox. 0.5 cm (0.2 inch) on the bottom.

Now, you can add a wire by using the zigzag stitch again. This way, the mask fits better on the nose, which is perfect for people with glasses as this prevents your glasses from misting up. I used the wires you can get at the supermarket to close breakfast bags.

The mask is open on the top, so that you can add a filter if needed (such as a coffee filter, or a piece of fleece).
Start at the side that’s open and thread in a lace (shoelace, elastic, or some fabric from an old shirt).

Lay the loop around your head, pull the face mask up to your chin and above your mouth and nose. Then fasten it at the back of your head and there you have it!
